Five Australian passengers are missing after a PT Garuda Indonesia airplane crashed in Indonesia yesterday leaving at least 21 people dead, Prime Minister John Howard said.``They're not confirmed dead, although as each hour goes by we must recognize that the prospects are diminishing,'' Howard told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio from Melbourne.
Ten Australians were on board when the Boeing Co. 737-400, carrying 140 people, careened off the runway and burst into flames as it landed in Yogyakarta in central Java.
Australia has sent 78 people, including doctors, accident investigators and police, to help with the recovery, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said. It has also offered to evacuate the injured to Australian hospitals.
