NASA prepares for Wednesday space shuttle launch

Washington - US space shuttle Atlantis, which has had its launch date pushed back several times due to weather problems, should blast off Wednesday - if the skies remain clear.

NASA officials said Tuesday in Cape Canaveral, Florida, that the weather forecast looks good for the planned launch at 12:29 pm (1629 GMT) Wednesday.

The chance of bad weather prohibiting the launch stands at 30 per cent, Kathy Winters, NASA's launch weather officer, said. If the shuttle cannot launch Wednesday, the space agency will try again Thursday or Friday.

'The countdown is going extremely well, we are not tracking any problems,' said Mike Leinbach, shuttle launch director. 'We will just deal with the weather.'
