sourceThere was unusual excitement this year at the annual event, the largest video game expo in the world, which marked its 10th anniversary with a record 148 companies represented from all over the world.
The buzz is being created by the launch of two new consoles, which could help mark this year as a major turning point for the sector.
Sony's long-awaited PlayStation3 will appear in Japan and the US this year, while Nintendo, a pioneer of the video game business, is bringing out Wii, which it touts as a completely new type of gaming experience.
These arrivals will set the stage for a three-way battle among Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft, whose Xbox 360 has been selling for nearly a year. "The games industry is at a crossroads," says Hiroshi Kamide, games analyst at KBC Securities in Tokyo.
