Dwarf planet named after Goddess of strife

The dwarf member of the solar system responsible for stripping Pluto from its planetery status has been named Eris after involving much dispute in its naming process.

Pluto's official status as a planet has been a constant subject of controversy, fueled by the past lack of a clear definition of planet. The controversial debate has been carried out since 1992, when the first Kuiper Belt Object, 1992 QB1, was discovered. Present discovery has intensified the argument.

Discovery by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930, Pluto was considered the second largest dwarf planet and the ninth planet of the solar system.

In recent times, many similar objects were discovered in the outer solar system, most notably the trans-Neptunian object 2003 UB313, discovered by the team of Michael E. Brown, Chad Trujillo, and David Rabinowitz.
