Sony rides high in year of the box

There was unusual excitement this year at the annual event, the largest video game expo in the world, which marked its 10th anniversary with a record 148 companies represented from all over the world.

The buzz is being created by the launch of two new consoles, which could help mark this year as a major turning point for the sector.

Sony's long-awaited PlayStation3 will appear in Japan and the US this year, while Nintendo, a pioneer of the video game business, is bringing out Wii, which it touts as a completely new type of gaming experience.

These arrivals will set the stage for a three-way battle among Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft, whose Xbox 360 has been selling for nearly a year. "The games industry is at a crossroads," says Hiroshi Kamide, games analyst at KBC Securities in Tokyo.
