Microsoft takes aim at iPod

As part of its foray into the portable digital entertainment market, Microsoft Corp. wants to use its upcoming Zune player to foster the idea of sharing files on the go — something that could appeal to consumers and to media companies interested in tapping into the possibilities of viral marketing.

The market-leading Apple iPod is designed to let people take files with them anywhere. Microsoft's upcoming Zune player will do the same thing, but it will also have technology that allows easy sharing of music with friends or anyone else in the vicinity.

The software maker said Thursday that its portable Zune media player, scheduled to be available around the holiday season, will include wireless technology to let people share some of their favourite songs, playlists or pictures with other Zune users who are close by.
